Gilani was born in 1078 CE (470 AH) in the town of Na'if, Rezvanshahr in Gilan, Iran. He belonged to a noble family that traced its lineage to Hasan ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His father, Abu Saleh, was a pious and respected man who was known as Jangi Dost (fight-lover) for his bravery and generosity. His mother, Ummul Khair Fatima, was also a descendant of Husayn ibn Ali, the brother of Hasan. Gilani grew up in a religious and scholarly environment, learning the Quran and Hadith from an early age.
When he was 18 years old, Gilani left his hometown and traveled to Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate and the center of Islamic learning and culture. There, he studied Islamic law under Abu Saeed Mubarak Makhzoomi and Ibn Aqil, two eminent jurists of the Hanbali school. He also studied Hadith under Abu Muhammad Ja'far al-Sarraj, a renowned scholar and transmitter of Prophetic traditions. He excelled in his studies and earned the respect and admiration of his teachers and peers.
However, Gilani was not satisfied with the mere knowledge of the outward aspects of Islam. He felt a strong attraction to the inner dimension of Islam, which is Sufism or mysticism. He sought out a spiritual guide who could lead him to the path of Allah and His love. He found such a guide in Abu'l-Khair Hammad ibn Muslim al-Dabbas, a Sufi master who initiated him into the Sufi way. Under his guidance, Gilani practiced various spiritual disciplines such as fasting, praying, meditating, reciting God's names, and renouncing worldly pleasures. He also learned the secrets and mysteries of Sufism from his master. 061ffe29dd
